Scoliosis is an abnormal curvature of the spine. There are very few signs or symptoms in the early stages of scoliosis, therefore, screenings are extremely important and most often the earliest predictor of a spinal problem. Approximately two to three percent of school-aged children have scoliosis. It is recommended that screenings begin in early adolescence so that treatment, if medically necessary, can start while the child is still growing. If your child has a positive scoliosis screening, I may recommend spinal x-rays.
Treatment depends on what type of scoliosis is present, the degree of curvature and how much growth is still expected. I offer an individualized treatment plan that may include manual manipulation, bracing, postural exercises and orthotics.
